About this tour

The Czech Republic, a small nation at the heart of Europe, never fails to impress with its timeless river landscapes, charming villages and mystical castles, rich with history dating back to the Middle Ages.

Also known as the “City of a Hundred Spires”, Prague is both beginning and end point for this beautiful bike and barge tour along the magnificent Elbe and the Vltava rivers. When Prague’s bridges over the Vltava glow amber, and the city’s castle spires gleam in the sunlight, it’s obvious how Prague also came to be known as the “Golden City”. Both multifaceted and unique, traditional and modern – Prague is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful metropoles with its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town. Moored about a kilometer from the iconic Charles Bridge, the Florentina will provide an ideal springboard for you to explore this gorgeous city. Spots such as the marvellously restored Old Town Square, busy Wenceslas Square or the Josefov (Jewish Quarter) are all waiting for you. And don’t forget to enjoy delicious local specialities, such as beer and roast pork with dumplings. When you’re on the move with your bike there’s never been a better excuse to take a break and quench your thirst with a glass of  the nation’s much-loved amber nectar.

The ship – Your sailing hotel
In between cycling excursions, you cruise along with the ship, which travels to a new destination every day. You dine, sleep and eat breakfast on board. You’ll receive a packed lunch every day, and you can usually choose between a longer or shorter bike ride. It’s also possible to spend a day on board if you like. There are rental bikes on board, but you can also bring your own if you mention it when booking.

Day to day program

All distances are “approximate distances” of recommended bike tours.
Details: In italics printed parts will be covered by the ship

The tour details are barring changes, a.o. as a result of nautical, technical or meteorological reasons.

Day 1: Arrival in Prague

The tour begins in Prague, with embarkation on board the Florentina at 4 pm. Take your time to settle in, with an introduction to the ship, the crew, and tour plans for the week. After dinner, there’s time for a stroll over the Charles Bridge, which is particularly beautiful at night. Enjoy the stunning view of the illuminated Prague Castle.

Day 2: Prague – Kralupy (approx. 27 km / 16.2 mi.)

You will receive your bike and start your first cycling tour. Set out north along the Vltava River through the green and peaceful Troja district, home to baroque Troja Castle and the Prague Zoo, to the village of Klecánky. Then continue overland, via the rural villages of Drasty and Vodochody, before returning to ride along the winding river bank to today’s destination of Kralupy.

Day 3: Kralupy – Mělník (approx. 28 km / 16.8 mi.) |  Mělník – Litoměřice

Following breakfast, we set out on the day’s cycling tour. You’ll ride – almost always following the Vltava River– to the historic village of Nelahozeves. Here you can visit the childhood home of 19th century composer Antonin Dvořák, who was greatly inspired by local folk music; and Nelahozeves Caslte, one of the most famous Renaissance castles in Bohemia, with its graciously restored period rooms. The tour then takes you to Veltrusý Park, with numerous sculptures and gazebos in an extensive terrain, up to the royal town of Mělník. In the early afternoon return back to the ship and enjoy the boat trip on the Elbe River to Litoměřice.

Day 4:  Litoměřice, day of rest or cycle tour to Střekov Castle and back (approx. 49 km / 29.5 mi.)

Enjoy a day at leisure discovering one of the oldest and most beautiful Czech towns, Litoměřice. Let yourself be enchanted by its vibrant and beautifully preserved Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings in the town center, partly encircled by Gothic fortifications. Sites well worth a visit include the Baroque Cathedral of St Stephen perched atop a hill, the town’s extensive network of underground tunnels, or the stately Bishop’s residence adjoining the cathedral. For those wishing to explore the legacy of WWII, an individual visit to the nearby Terezín Memorial (Theresienstadt concentration camp), is a moving and powerful experience (only 5 km/3 mi.).

For more advanced cyclists, we recommend the scenic bike tour to the castle Střekov with appealing café, idyllically situated in the narrow valley of the Elbe River. Your route will take you through the small town of Velké Žernoseky (famous Czech wine-growing region), past the Bohemian Gate – the transition from the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to the Bohemian Uplands – to Střekov Castle. From here you will have a magnificent view of the Elbe River and the surrounding mountains. Afterwards you will cycle back to Litoměřice, where your ship will anchor for the night.

Day 5: Litoměřice – Roudnice | Roudnice – Mělník – Mlčechvosty (approx. 40 km / 24 mi.)

Early this morning, the ship will sail to Roudnice, the starting point for today’s cycling tour. Traveling along the west bank of the Elbe, via villages Dobřín, Račice and Vliněves, we cycle southwards back to charming Mělník. Stop to enjoy the splendid panoramic view of the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe Rivers from the town’s hilltop castle. Continue cycling to today’s destination Mlčechvosty, where the ship arrives around 5 pm.

Day 6: Mlčechvosty – Prague (ca. 40 km / 24 mi.)

You can choose to set out on today’s bike tour via Nelahozeves, Kralupy, Vodochody, Drasty and Klecánky back to Prague or to simply relax on the ship’s  sun deck. The ship arrives around 3.30 pm, allowing for the rest of the afternoon to be dedicated to further explorations around Prague.

Day 7: Prague, cycle tour Prague – Zbraslav and back (ca. 30 km / 18 mi.)

Take your time today to discover the right bank of the Vltava River, with its many highlights nestled around the Old Town, New Town and Jewish Quarter. Or simply meander the streets or sit in a café on the Old Town Square watching life go by. If you feel like cycling, we recommend a tour upstream along the Vltava River to Zbraslav and back. As you follow the river south, a trip to Vyšehrad Castle is worthwhile. Built around the 10th century on a hill overlooking the river, local legend holds that this was the founding settlement that later grew into Prague.

Day 8: Prague

Enjoy a last breakfast, before goodbyes and disembarkation around 10 am.

Good to know
  • Cycle tours: The daily cycling tours are non-guided, independent tours. You will ride individually with the help of a detailed cycling map, GPS tracks and printed route notes (available on board). The on-board tour manager will provide you with all necessary tour information during her/his daily briefings. The on-board tour manager doesn’t cycle her-/himself but can always be reached on her/his cell phone. Cycling route distances in the travel program are approximate.
  • If you prefer not to cycle on a particular day, you’re welcome to stay on board and relax while the ship cruises to the next landing place.
  • Bike paths: You will cycle on paved or asphalted cycle ways, on very lightly-trafficed agricultural roads as well as on unpaved trails leading through forests or fields. There will also be short legs along heavy-trafficked roads. The terrain is mostly flat, though there are some slopes to cope with.
  • Excursions: We offer a small excursion program, that can be booked directly on board at the cruise director only. You will get a brief description together with your travel documents. Depending on the number of participants some excursions could be carried out in 2 languages (German/ English).
  • Luggage We recommend: rainwear, bicycle helmet, sunhat and sneakers.
  • Schedule and program changes Basically, we reserve the right to make changes of routing and program. If there is low or high water and a route cannot be shipped, the captain reserves the right to change the route in view of your safety (this cannot be accepted as a reason for free withdrawal). Same applies to previously unknown administrative orders of lock or bridge repairs.
  • Travel documents: EU-citizens (without special situations like dual citizenship, main residence abroad or a limited-validity passport) are required to have a valid passport or ID-card, not expiring within six (6) months of the return of your cruise. We kindly ask non-EU citizens, EU-nationals with multiple citizenship or anybody who has to respect special legal entry requirements for the country to visit, to inform about visa and entry documents at the competent embassy.
  • This trip is not suitable for guests with reduced mobility.

The bicycles of Boat Bike Tours

Always the best rental bikes

The rental bikes on our ships are unisex bicycles with a low bar and a comfortable upright sitting position. These are stable and dependable bikes, good for miles in the saddle. Decide which kind of bike you want to rent and simply fill in your preference with your reservation. We’ll make sure you get the right bike for you. On most of our tours, the bike rental cost is not included in the tour’s price.

Every Boat Bike Tour rental bike is well equipped. The bikes consist of a lightweight aluminum frame and have highly-responsive handbrakes, at least seven speeds, an adjustable gel seat, normal flat pedals (no clips), an easy-to-use lock attached to the frame, and special puncture-resistant tires. All told, this is a light, stable and reliable bike, very suitable for touring long distances pleasantly.

Our e-bikes also have at least seven speeds and handbrakes. The motor runs on a 400Wh battery and offers three levels of power-assistance. The e-bikes include comfortable gel seats that can be adjusted for height, have a lock attached to the frame, and sport anti-puncture tires. Note that some of the ships have their own bikes on board. They may look a bit different, but qualitatively they are equal to Boat Bike Tours’s e-bikes.

Bicycle helmets
The use of bicycle helmets is not required in the Netherlands, but for safety’s sake they are suggested. If you wish to rent one, you can do so during the booking process. If you book a premium tour and rent a bike or e-bike, then the helmet and a “limit of liability for damage or loss” for your bike or e-bike is included in the rental price.

Other rental items
Other items such as children’s bikes, tandems, family tandems (child & adult), tag-along, trailers to carry toddlers and child seats are available on request.

Taking your own bike or e-bike?
The fee for parking your own bicycle is €10 per week. For an e-bike the fee is €25 to cover parking and charging the battery. For safety reasons it is not always possible to charge your e-bike batteries in your cabin. The crew will tell you where you can charge the battery on board the ship. Neither the crew nor Boat Bike tours is responsible in any way for any damage, loss or theft of a guest’s own bike or e-bike or its accessories. Note: not all the ships are suitable or have enough room for extra bikes, so make sure you check with us well ahead of travel.

Rob

We booked our Prague boat/bike tour through Boat Bike Tours but the tour was run by SE tours. The tour was really fun and exactly what we expected. The upper deck cabins on the MS Florentina were nice but small compared to the MS Magnifique II (Netherlands). The food includes a nice breakfast where you also make your lunch to be enjoyed on the bike route….. pick a nice spot and take a break. The dinners are a notch up and the handbook says men should wear long pants. Many men on our boat didn’t have long pants but dressed appropriately for a nice dinner. This tour offered 4 excursions ($15 – 20) to the castles and points of interest in the towns we cycled through. Since we only rode about 20 miles a day, the tours fit in perfectly. The star of this tour is the city of Prague itself. We recommend staying several extra nights and staying away from the tourist traps as much as possible.
