Bike and Barge Italy: Sicily + Aeolian Islands | Sundial

Be enchanted by this spectacular cruise among the extraordinary Aeolian islands. On board a charming caique, a traditional fishing boat, you will discover these volcanic islands, today part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. Starting from Milazzo, on the north-east coast of Sicily, your first stop will be the island of Vulcano. The journey continues to Panarea, with its large rocky ridges. In the background you will admire the continuous explosive activity of the volcano Stromboli. We then head to Salina, where you can’t miss tasting a typical Sicilian ‘granita’! Finally, enjoy a round tour on the charming island of Lipari.

Get ready to experience a truly active journey intended to combine exploration and relaxation with cycling and walking tours, and to enjoy the wonders of the Aeolian Islands, also known as the pearls of Sicily.

Day to day program

We wish to specify that this is not a sailing trip. The ship is a motor vessel, it has sails but the navigation is powered by engines.

All distances are “approximate distances” of recommended bike tours.
The tour details are barring changes, a.o. as a result of nautical, technical or meteorological reasons.

Day 1 (Sat): Embarkation: Milazzo

Individual arrival and meeting at 3.30 pm at Catania airport, where you’ll be transferred to Milazzo harbor. Embarkation is at 6 pm at the Marina di Nettuno in Milazzo. Get to know your crew and accommodation on board, and enjoy a welcome drink, dinner and presentation of the program. Overnight in the harbor of Milazzo.

Day 2 (Sun): Milazzo  (Approx. 15 km/9.4 mi.)

Today you cycle towards Capo Milazzo, where you’ll have the chance to bathe in the wonderful “Venus Pool”, a protected natural sea pool. Once back in Milazzo, you can visit the castle and its ancient hamlet. We stay tonight in the harbor of Milazzo.

Day 3 (Mon): Milazzo – island Vulcano | Vulcano, roundtour (Approx. 20 km/12.7 mi.)

Today your caique Sundial will start navigating towards the island of Vulcano, the so-called “Sulphur Island”, where you will discover the island’s hinterland around Piano Grillo by bike, an ideal place to admire an amazing landscape. Then enjoy free time in the afternoon, with plenty of interesting  suggestions: walk up to the crater of the volcano, take a mud bath at the island’s sulphur beach or you can even swim among underwater fumaroles (volcanic vents). Overnight in the harbor of Vulcano.

Day 4 (Tue): Vulcano – Panarea – Stromboli (3h30 walking)

After breakfast we head towards Panarea. Stop for a swim close to the little islands of Lisca Bianca, Bottara and Dattilo, where volcanic activity is still clearly visible. Once in Panarea, the smallest of the Aeolian Islands, you will have lunch at anchor in a nice bay. Then the caique Sundial will navigate towards Stromboli, with a superb view over the Sciara del Fuoco, Stromboli’s famous talus scree, which sometimes still features lava flows. In the late afternoon, we take a walking trip up to 400mt above sea level, to admire the volcanic activity at dusk. We then enjoy a picnic dinner at a nice panoramic point. Tonight we stay in the roadstead (sheltered anchorage) at Stromboli.

Day 5 (Wed): Stromboli – Panarea (2h30 walking) | Panarea – Salina

After breakfast we navigate back towards Panarea. We drop anchor in the bay of Porto San Pietro, where you’ll enjoy a pleasant walk to visit the little village of Panarea, Drautto Beach and its prehistoric village. We stop for a picnic lunch at Cala Junco and then return back on board. Afterwards, we head towards the island of Salina, where you can visit a local shop and sample local products. Dine out tonight at your own expense at one of Salina’s charming restaurants, and overnight in the harbor of Salina.

Day 6 (Thu): Salina (Approx. 20 km/12.7 mi.) | Salina – Lipari

Today, you’ll start cycling directly on the island of Salina. From Santa Marina on the east coast you’ll ride to Pollara, a panoramic point on the west coast, where you will visit the lake of Lingua and Pollara, with the chance to refresh yourself with a delicious ‘granita’. Back on board, your caique Sundial will navigate to the island of Lipari, where you can stroll around its charming village. Overnight in the harbor of Lipari.

Day 7 (Fri): Lipari (Approx. 25 km/16 mi.) | Lipari – Milazzo

After breakfast you’ll enjoy a wonderful coast-to-coast bike ride. Starting from the hamlet of Lipari, you will pass by the beautiful village and beach of Canneto. Stop for your picnic lunch at the panoramic point at Quattrocchi and then return to Lipari’s historical center, rich in shops and restaurants. Back on board, Sundial will navigate to Milazzo. Enjoy your last dinner at one of Milazzo’s many restaurants and overnight in the harbor of Milazzo.

Day 8 (Sat): Disembarkation: Milazzo

Check-out at 9am after breakfast and collective transfer to Catania airport. Arrival in Catania airport will be around 12 midday.

SGR guarantee scheme applicable

Tour operators are obliged by applicable Dutch and European law to secure customer received funds and payments in the event of their own insolvency or bankruptcy (in accordance with Section 513a of the Dutch Civil Code (Burgerlijk Wetboek) and EU Directive 2015/2302).

Boat Bike Tours (Chamber of Commerce register number 3714 7084) is a participant of SGR (Stichting Garantiefonds Reisgelden) and is registered under number 3.734. This registration can be checked on www.sgr.nl.

The participating tour operators are subject to the guarantee protection of the SGR insolvency guarantee system that is required by law in the Netherlands. Under SGR’s warranty, the prepaid travel sums will be reimbursed to the end user if the tour operator is financially unable to meet its contractual obligations. If the agreement includes transportation and the destination has already been reached, the return trip will be arranged.

Extended warranty policy during the Corona COVID-19 crisis:
“Corona Voucher” with SGR protection

In the context of the exceptional circumstances resulting from the Corona COVID-19 crisis, all registered participants in SGR may issue so-called “Corona Vouchers” if the organizing tour operator is unable to carry out a tour due to official measures and other serious circumstances of force majeure, and therefore have to cancel the trip.

This means that a Corona voucher offered to the customer by Boat Bike Tours is accepted under the protection of the SGR guarantee system, and – for this reason – all payments and deposits made by a customer are and remain secured.

On March 16, 2020, the Board of Directors of the SGR adopted the following resolution:

  1. As of March 16, 2020, SGR will consider vouchers from tour operators participating in SGR as covered by SGR within the meaning of Article 3 of the SGR Guarantee System, subject to points 2 through 7 of this Decision.
  2. This cover only applies if the voucher fulfills the model voucher stipulated by SGR, and only for vouchers issued in the event of a cancellation of trips in connection with the inability to carry out the trip in connection with the occurrence of unavoidable and exceptional circumstances as a result of the Corona COVID-19 Virus and provided that the value of the voucher is clearly filled out and the voucher contains the name “Corona voucher”.
  3. The value of the voucher cannot be higher than the payment already made for the trip, which had to be canceled due to the Corona COVID-19 virus and for which the SGR guarantee originally applied.
  4. The voucher must contain an express validity period of a maximum of one (1) year after the date of issue.
  5. The voucher must state that the SGR guarantee system applies.
  6. This decision must be communicated on the SGR Website with a clear explanation of the particularities, timing and enforcement of Article 3 (10) (g) of the guarantee system for other vouchers and traveler checks.
  7. This decision regarding the right to issue of a special Corona voucher with a guarantee from SGR is temporary and expires on June 1, 2020, subject to the possibility for the Executive Board to extend this period after approval by the Supervisory Board.

This decision was approved by the SGR Board of Directors and is dated March 16, 2020.

Note: The above translations about SGR are not official SGR translations. SGR only communicates in Dutch and English. The Dutch text on the SGR guarantee system is generally binding.

In exceptional cases (such as bad meteorological and/or sea conditions), for safety reasons, the ship might have to return to a harbor, also during the night that’s scheduled in the roadstead.
Only, and exclusively in this case, guests will be asked to pay a supplement for the overnight in the harbor. This amount, variable from port to port, will be divided among all participants and will be paid directly on site (approximately €20- 50 per person per night, subject to changes).

Aeolian Islands boat bike tour was great! What a beautiful place! The Sundial was a beautiful boat with lovely meals and crew. There was limited air-conditioning and wifi available-some nights were quite warm in the little cabin. Tour was rated as a “2”-not accurate! Many hills and climbs-I am an avid biker and would recommend ebike for this tour.

We did the Trip of Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. This trip was the best trip we ever took. Very exoctic we thought. However, the climate was pretty hot, and the air conditioning was sporadic making it hard to sleep which was an issue for all the guests, the wifi was also sporadic. The ship Sundial was beautiful, the tour…
