Sail and Bike Netherlands: Zuiderzee Coast | Sailing ship Soeverein

Take a trip back in time and discover the Dutch ‘Golden Age’. Cycle through flat green polders, along old dikes and through idyllic towns. Daily destinations are to some of the most beautiful ports from the heyday of Holland’s economy and culture, such as Enkhuizen, Hoorn or Medemblik, but also to small villages and former Zuiderzee islands that through land reclamation are now part of the mainland.

You will sleep on the Soeverein, a 3-master built in the style of the East Indiamen merchant ships of the 17th Century. From the big upper deck you have a magnificent view out over the water and the coastline. Below deck there are comfortable sleeping cabins, a professional kitchen and a large lounge to make your stay on board a pleasure. Gerard, Denise and their crew are our hosts during this week-long Zuiderzee Coast tour. Daily programs are flexible allowing you to choose from among tours of different lengths for that particular day. Or you may choose to just relax and enjoy the day’s sail on board.

Day to day program

Tour info:
Total cycle kilometers: 251 km/150,6 miles. Easy tour on flat cycle tracks and minor roads. The only ascents are small and short and are found only in the area of the dykes and bridges. Based on the cycling map you can shorten or extend the tours as you wish.

Day 1 (Sat): Embarkation: Bataviahaven, Lelystad

Embarking on the Soeverein in Bataviahaven in Lelystad at 6 pm. The Batavia Shipyards with full-scale replicas of two impressive East India Company ships are nearby. Around 7 pm, we will have dinner together on board.

Day 2 (Sun): Lelystad – Urk | Urk – Schokland (Approx. 38 km/22,8 mi.)

From Lelystad, the Soeverein sails across the IJsselmeer to Urk. Since the draining of the Noordoost polder, several former Zuiderzee islands are now part of the mainland. The harbor town of Urk is the first former Zuiderzee island we visit. Worth seeing here is the fishing harbor and the historical town center. We will go by bike to the second former island of Schokland which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. The open-air museum in Middelbuurt brings the history of the island to life.

Day 3 (Mon): Urk – Stavoren | Stavoren – Hemelum – Bakhuizen – Stavoren (Approx. 30 km/18 mi.)

After breakfast we sail from Urk to Stavoren in Friesland. Typical for Friesland are the lakes and the agriculture activities. The land between the lakes consists largely of grass meadows. This makes the Frisian lake territory an excellent place for cycling tours. The route leads you to Molkwerum, Koudum and Galamadammen, situated between the lakes ‘De Morra’ and ‘De Fluessen’. Through the villages Hemelum, Bakhuizen and the smallest Frisian fisher’s place Laaxum you cycle back to Stavoren. Stavoren is the oldest city in Friesland and scene of the action of the folk tale of the Lady of Stavoren. The tale is a reminder of the maritime wealth once enjoyed by the town and its merchants. An alternative route (about 25 km/15 mi.) leads to Hindeloopen at the IJsselmeer.

Day 4 (Tue): Stavoren – Enkhuizen | Enkhuizen – Medemblik – Enkhuizen (Approx. 54 km/32,4 mi.)

In the morning we set sail from Stavoren to Enkhuizen. Under the guidance of the crew, you can help set the sails, steer the ship or learn how to read a nautical chart. There will be a midday snack on board. Then there’s cycling from Enkhuizen across the old Zuiderzee dike to Medemblik, the oldest West-Frisian town where today you can explore historical houses, street cafes, small museums or castle Radboud. Return by way of the green polders and small nature reserves. After dinner, enjoy a long stroll through Enkhuizen.

Day 5 (Wed): Enkhuizen – Hoorn or Enkhuizen – Hoorn (Approx. 45 km/27 mi.)

The Soeverein sails in the morning for about two hours from Enkhuizen to the historical IJsselmeer town of Hoorn. You have the choice of completing this leg of the trip by ship or by bike across the old Zuiderzee dike (ca. 24 km). Sailors and cyclers then meet up for lunch on board. Afterwards, it’s back on the bikes for a ride through the splendid West-Frisian landscape in the direction of Wognum and Rustenburg back to Hoorn. Touring Hoorn, you see many monuments from the days of the East India Company which had a subsidiary here.

Day 6 (Thu): Hoorn – Volendam or Hoorn – Schermerhorn – Graft – De Rijp – Edam – Volendam (Approx. 45 km/27 mi.)

The ship sails in the morning from Hoorn to Volendam, with a swing around the island of Marken. Your choice of program:
– Sail from Hoorn to Volendam. Lunch on board; afterwards a short cycling tour to Monnickendam (ca. 22 km/13.2 mi.), Edam (ca. 10 km/ 6 mi.) or Marken (ca. 40 km/24 mi.).
Or:
– Cycling tour from Hoorn via Schermerhorn, Graft, De Rijp and Edam to Volendam . In De Rijp, take a walk back through the 17th Century. Sailors and fishermen formerly lived in the houses with wooden gables. Lunch on board or a packed lunch for those on the road. Those who still have energy after this tour for more discovery trips – or take a comfortable ride on the ferry from Volendam to the picturesque island of Marken (bikes can be taken along). Marken is also a former island that today is linked to the mainland by a dike. Volendam offers a lively harbor scene with cafes, souvenir- and fish shops, idyllic side streets and an eel smoke-house.

Day 7 (Fri): Volendam – Lelystad |(Approx. 39 km/23,4 mi.)

After breakfast on board, we sail for about 4 hours back to Lelystad. The cycling tour takes you through a unique region: the Nature Reserve Oostvaardersplassen. Since its reclamation from the freshwater lake IJsselmeer, the vegetation of this wetland below sea level has rapidly developed by natural succession. Oostvaardersplassen is home to a large variety of bird species. Also heck cattle, red deer and konik horses live here in wild herds. There are various vantage points where you can observe the animals.

Day 8 (Sat): Disembarkation: Bataviahaven, Lelystad

Approx. 10 am disembarking after breakfast and departure home.

Important remarks for the Sail & Bike program:
Adventure is a part of every Sail & Bike program: the departure and arrival day and the location – Lelystad – are a certainty, 100%. For the rest, the planned daily sailing routes are partially dependent on the strength and direction of the wind. The captain decides the precise route to be taken day by day, and discusses the options with his onboard guests. The crew does everything in its power to enable the program to run according to plan and to offer you as fascinating, varied and active a week as possible, in which nature and culture play a major part. It is, however, not unthinkable that departure times and the time spent on the water – and even the program itself – may be adjusted during the week. Enjoy the ride and be led by the elements!
Whenever possible, various passages will be undertaken fully rigged and anyone who would like to help the crew sail and steer the ship is welcome to do so. This is of course absolutely up to you and no sailing experience is necessary.
