We have three types of tours: independent, semi-guided and fully-guided cycling. For all tours on our website, you will find the corresponding icons, as described below. Take a look to see what type of tour suits you best.
- Independent cycling
Perfect for more experienced cyclists. With a detailed map of the area, written descriptions, (often) GPX-files and a suggested route for close-range explorations, you decide where you go and how fast you ride. Read more about independent cycling here.
- Semi-guided cycling
You will get a daily briefing from the tour leader, but you cycle on your own, make stops where and when you wish. You cycle with the help of a detailed cycling map, a written route description and GPX-files or the free Boat Bike Tours version of the ‘Ride With GPS’ app for your mobile phone. The tour leader is also cycling, so: she/he is always close and can be contacted by phone in case of emergencies, problems or questions. Read more about semi-guided cycling here.
- Fully-guided cycling
Not too comfortable about cycling on your own in a different country? No big deal! Just follow the tour leader(s). Together with the rest of the group, you will visit interesting and fun sites on the way. Read more about fully-guided cycling here.
Guided cycling with Boat Bike Tours means that group sizes for cycling are limited to 18 (for smaller barges) or 22 people (larger ships). If there are more cyclists on board, a second tour leader will guide the other group. In this case, there will be a choice between shorter/slower or longer/quicker day trips (depending on the tour program). For our Premium tours, the fully-guided cycling concept with two tour leaders is the standard.
